About the role

The Risk and Safety Coordinator ensures Venues and Ministry Programs operate to the highest standards of safety by overseeing risk management plans, conducting incident reviews, implementing training, and engaging with industry best practice. This role safeguards staff, guests, and participants while contributing to Youthworks’ mission of providing world-class Christian Outdoor Education. 

Your responsibilities

Ministry 

  • Role model Christian behaviour in all aspects of the role. 

  • Work autonomously and effectively in a ministry environment, using time efficiently, honestly and resourcefully. 

  • Be an active team member, participating in team meetings and devotions, and be an active member of the Youthworks community. 

  • Demonstrate continual commitment to Youthworks’ strategic plan.

  • Lead, encourage, disciple and pastorally care for staff. 

  • Work under the leadership of the Strategic Capability Manager to achieve excellence in all facets of ministry. 

Risk & Safety Management 

  • Lead the development, revision, and implementation of VMP risk management protocols. 

  • Approve and oversee Risk Management Plans, Expedition Plans, and program locations to ensure compliance with safety guidelines. 

  • Conduct weekly reviews of incidents, near misses, and hazard notifications, identifying trends and improvements. 

  • Lead critical incident reviews and recommend preventive measures. 

  • Provide recommendations to the Senior Leadership Team regarding hazards, incidents, and near misses. 

  • Publish safety alerts and provide training updates to keep staff informed of best practice. 

  • Collaborate with YW People & Safety to review and enhance Critical Incident Plans. 

  • Design and conduct drills to evaluate critical incident response capabilities. 

  • Chair the Joint Technical Advisory Committee (JTAC) meetings to address technical and safety issues. 

  • Provide expert consultation to team leaders and staff on program safety decisions. 

  • Address customer concerns related to risk and safety with clear, supportive communication. 

  • Assist in staff training and development in relation to safety practices. 

Systems & Compliance 

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety, licensing and regulatory requirements. 

  • Maintain accurate incident and safety records as required by Youthworks and industry standards. 

  • Monitor industry knowledge and best practices, applying continuous improvement to Youthworks systems. 

  • Report risk-related issues promptly to relevant stakeholders. 

Other 

  • Assist with delivering a limited and agreed number of training events as appropriate. 

  • Keep abreast of industry knowledge, initiatives and changes. 

  • Attend Youthworks conferences, events and training as required. 

  • Adhere to Youthworks policies and procedures. 

  • Perform additional duties within skill set as required. 

You will need to demonstrate

  • Essential 

    • Qualifications in Outdoor Recreation (Certificate IV or higher). 

    • Current qualifications in First Aid and Water Rescue. 

    • At least 8–10 years’ experience in Outdoor Education, with significant time in risk and safety management. 

    • Demonstrated experience managing safety in high-risk contexts. 

    • Strong knowledge of risk assessment, critical incident planning, and industry best practice. 

    • Proven ability in Christian servant leadership, with pastoral care for staff. 

    • Passion for Word Ministry, mentoring, and training. 

    • Strong resilience, initiative, and ability to thrive in leadership roles. 

    • Excellent organisational and time management skills with flexibility to adapt to changing priorities. 

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management systems. 

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a focus on customer service. 

    • Personal Christian faith with active involvement in a local church and willingness to work within an Anglican organisation. 

    • Commitment to Youthworks’ mission. 

What we would really like you to have

    • Qualifications in Theology or Outdoor Leadership. 

    • Light Rigid driver’s licence.
