You’re passing on the gift of SRE teaching to a new generation

In 2026, Kaitlyn is learning to teach SRE alongside Hugh, the teacher who taught her SRE in Year 3. Your support helps make this kind of generational handover possible.

Hugh began teaching SRE in 2016. Ten years later, Kaitlyn is shadowing him in a kindy class in Sydney’s Parramatta region. She’s gaining confidence in the classroom and has already started teaching some SRE classes on her own.

‍“SRE was a big part of my origin story as a Christian and definitely helped me learn and stay true to my faith when I was younger, which I hope to do with the coming generation!” Kaitlyn says.

Kaitlyn completed five Youthworks SRE training modules to gain her accreditation. Since her church coordinates SRE in schools that are not close to where she lives, she remembered Hugh and approached him about teaching alongside him in his parish.

Now Hugh is mentoring Kaitlyn as they plan lessons, work through the curriculum, and share class activities. Hugh shares,

“We’ve also had intentional chats after the weekly class, reflecting on what happened in the class, what we could learn from this, and what did or didn’t work.”

“It’s encouraging how God has worked in Kaitlyn’s life. There’s something special about seeing kids grow up in the faith, and now her willingness to teach SRE,” says Hugh.

Kaitlyn says her experience as an SRE student shaped her decision to teach.

“I love working with kids! I thought teaching SRE would be one of the best ways for me to give back to the community of people who raised me as a Christian during the early years of primary school.”
