New Local Safe Ministry Trainers
This is for appropriately qualified persons who wish to become Local Safe Ministry Trainers for their parish. Appropriate qualifications for a trainer may include experienced educators/trainers, those working in the child protection field, theological training or other qualifications relevant to child protection and education.
Expectations for Local Safe Ministry Trainers
The role of the Local Safe Ministry Trainer is to run the Youthworks Safe Ministry modules and to record who has been trained and what training the person attended. This record should be kept by the Safe Ministry Representative.
This person would be qualified to teach all the Safe Ministry modules to members of their home church and members from other denominations where they are involved together in collaborative ministry, for example SRE. Smaller parishes can join together to have one trainer that supports two parishes.
The Local Safe Ministry Trainer is not expected to implement Safe Ministry in their church, this is the responsibility of the parish council, Senior Minister and Safe Ministry Representatives.
Trainer Seminar
The trainer course enables Local Safe Ministry Trainers to become familiar with the full Safe Ministry training pack. This includes reviewing the course material for Part A and Part B, Junior, Refresher and other statutory forms. It will also help to familiarise participants with applicable resources associated with each of the training courses.
Those who wish to become fully accredited Local Safe Ministry Trainers must complete the following.
- Complete Safe Ministry Essentials (Part A & B). This is a necessary pre-requisite;
- Complete the Local Safe Ministry Trainer Application Form. Please bring the completed form to the trainer seminar.
- Attend a 3hr Local Safe Ministry Trainer seminar (see below);
- Be observed and evaluated by a Youthworks advisor training a small group of participants in at least one module/2hrs of the Safe Ministry training course eg Part B or Refresher. Upon completion of this session, and if appropriate, the trainer will be accredited as a trainer for their parish.
Maintaining Accreditation
It is a condition of accreditation that Local Safe Ministry Trainers attend an update course every 3 years and be willing to be observed training one of the courses. This provides the opportunity for practical feedback for the trainer and an assurance for the Diocese that the training is being conducted at an appropriate standard. Local Trainers will be randomly selected for observation.
Please note Local Safe Ministry Trainers are only qualified to train in their local church. Smaller churches can combine together to have a single trainer who will register for each of the churches they represent.
