Available Safe Ministry Training
Safe Ministry Training is held three times each year, enabling teams and individuals to access first-time training or refresher training in a location nearest to them.
The next Safe Ministry Training will be held on June 15th, 2013.
Please note that from January 2013 there is a cost associated with all Safe Ministry Training, for all participants; and registration and payment MUST be made prior to the day. (Details Below)
Alternatively you could train a Local Safe Ministry Trainer for your church and have the flexibilitiy to do the training at a time convenient for you. More details can be found here.
Courses
Youthworks' Safe Ministry Training Pack contains an initial awareness workshop - Safe Ministry Essentials (Part A & B) which can be done separately or back to back. It also contains a Junior version (for leaders under 16 years) and a Refresher workshop (to be completed every 3 years).
Safe Ministry Essentials (Part A & B)
Part A: Leading Children and Youth (2 hrs)
This course sets a framework of appropriate leadership behaviours and characteristics that are built on in Part B.
It is set out into three main sections:
- Theology of Leadership in ministry
- Working with children and young people
- Characteristics of a ministry leader
Everyone involved in working with children and youth in Sydney Anglican Churches must complete this course once (or equivalent).
Part B: Protecting Children and Youth (2.5 hrs)
This course aims to provide a basic understanding of protective behaviours and legal and church procedures for providing a safe environment. It covers topics such as:
- Indicators of abuse
- Disclosure of abuse
- Appropriate reporting procedures
- OHS issues
Due to the presentation of information on grooming and sexual abuse it is advised that this course may not be suitable for helpers who are under 16 years of age (see Junior version).
Safe Ministry Junior Leader's module (2hrs)
The purpose of this module is to educate Junior Leaders with a basic understanding of what it means to lead and protect children and youth in a ministry setting. This course is not run by Youthworks but is part of the Safe Ministry Pack and can be run by Local Safe Ministry Trainers.
A Junior Leader
- is any person under the age of 16
- is a helper in the context of the ministry they are involved in
- is not in a paid or supervisory ministry position
- will be supervised at all times by an experienced leader
Note: Although this module is not mandatory, it is highly recommended to ensure that all leaders are equipped with appropriate knowledge for the role of leadership.
Safe Ministry Refresher (2.5 hrs)
This module is designed to update leaders, and those involved in children’s and youth ministries, in Safe Ministry. In accordance with Chapter 7 of the Anglican Church Diocese of Sydney Parish Administration Ordinance (2008) anyone involved in children’s and youth ministry must complete Safe Ministry training every three years. This course should be completed after initial Safe Ministry training such as Safe Ministry Essentials (Part A&B)
Locations
Safe Ministry Essientials (Part A & B) and the Refresher Course will be run during Safe Ministry Week at various locations around the Sydney Diocese. The next Safe Ministry Training will be held on 15th June, 2013. Click here for more information.

(Please note that the Refresher will be running twice throughout the day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon)

Safe Ministry Essentials (Part A&B) | $25 per module/$50 for both modules ($20 per module for Sydney Anglicans*)
Safe Ministry Refresher | $25 ($20 per module for Sydney Anglicans*)
For all Safe Ministry training conducted outside Safe Ministry Week (Training on Request) the cost for all Denominations is $30 per module.
* Youthworks Safe Ministry is subsidised by the Anglican Diocese of Sydney.
Registration
Registration and payment for training conducted during Safe Ministry Week is required prior to the day.
