I have been involved in Children’s and Youth Ministry for the past 15 years. Although I trained as a music teacher, from an early age God placed on my heart the desire to teach children the Good News about Jesus. In my role as Children’s and Family Minister at Christ Church St Ives over the past 7 years, I had the wonderful privilege of working alongside and training Scripture Teachers and Children’s Ministry Leaders. Teaching SRE in three local Primary Schools was a definite highlight for me and I am thankful to God for the chance that we have in NSW to teach children about Jesus in this frontline ministry. I hope that my experience with church based and SRE ministry will be of service to you and your team as you serve our Lord Jesus.

The training of children from a young age to love the Lord Jesus is a crucial ministry which is so important in the life of the church. I have been teaching Sunday School and Scripture in NSW and the ACT over the last 20 years. I love explaining the Bible to children and adults and seeing them grow in their knowledge and love of the Lord Jesus.
I studied at Sydney Missionary and Bible College in 1983 and completing the Moore College PTC course. Both have helped me to prepare for the important task of helping people to understand the Bible better.

Children's and Primary SRE Advisor

In 2nd class I spent a number of weeks in hospital. My class teacher, Mrs Cliff and my Scripture teacher, Mr Bryden Brown (the local Anglican minister in Kiama) both visited me every few days. They bought with them games and books. They read to me and prayed with me. Their love was genuine, practical and consistent.

I often think that this experience underlines the strong desire I have to reach children with the good news of Jesus. I trained to be a teacher at Wollongong and have now spent over 35 years in children’s ministry both in schools and churches. For the past 10 years I have been training students at Youthworks College while at the same time studying theology.

As I join the Ministry Support Team I am looking forward to supporting and encouraging those who are making the most of the opportunities for mission that we have in our schools. I am confident that many will come to be saved because of the faithful love and teaching shown to children during our SRE classes.

Schools ministry is SO strategic to our Churches mission, that if we are not doing it, then we might as well pack up shop… SRE is by far the best connection into the communities we are in and the most obvious opportunity to tell people about Jesus by teaching the Bible and sharing our lives. (1 Thess 2:8).

When I was in Year 11, I realised that I had been in a mission field of a thousand students for 5 years and I had one year to go to do something about it! God has put this passion on my heart from then until now. For the last 11 years I have taught primary and high school SRE, run lunch groups, trained many student leadership groups and worked in youth ministry in Churches. There is much to be done and even though high school ministry has grown about 30% across the state in the last 5-10 years, we must keep going as we watch God continue growing this ministry.

High School Scripture and Chaplaincy are vital.  I have worked in high school and youth ministry for the last 35 years, as a teacher, as a youth pastor, and for 25 years as a pastor teaching scripture in schools each year. For many, many folk, this is the only contact that they will have with the opportunity to hear clearly the saving message of Jesus Christ. 

Scripture in Schools is important because It Saves!  God’s cause is so valuable because it is the only cause that saves. We can't save ourselves, but God came in the person of Jesus Christ to rescue us and pay the price for our sins. Jesus knew this was His cause, for in Luke 19:10 He said he had come to “Seek and to save that which is lost.”

Scripture in Schools is important because It Lasts!  Working by God’s side on God’s cause is work that will last. Jesus made this clear in John 15:16:  “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit-fruit that will last.” Some have given their lives to building a financial empire. Yet not one has lasted. Others have dedicated themselves to great works so their names are attached to a building somewhere. Though some of the buildings have stood for a long time, none will last forever. In fact, there is only one effort that will produce fruit that lasts forever.  I would urge you to give yourself wholeheartedly to this important work.

High school years are a time when many young people are considering important questions in life, "Who am I, why am I here, what do I believe?"  It is also a time when all of these youth are gathered in one place for forty weeks of the year.  Therefore it is a significant opportunity for churches to share the good news of Jesus with them.  I have been involved in school based ministry since 1986 as a teacher, and ministry worker in para church organisations.  Since 2005 I have been particularly focussed on supporting and developing high school SRE teachers. Over this time I have seen many students give their lives to Jesus and have watched them grow in their faith and ministry. My passion is to assist anyone who is involved in school ministry to make the most of the opportunities God has given them to serve Him in school ministry.
